It's a cold Finnish morning and Sofia picks me up in her own car at 7:45. He receives me with all the kindness in the world and we go to school.
She introduces me to director Ture and her partner Stina. The headmaster gives me the center's schedule and invites me to start by attending his music class. They are very kind and friendly.
School surroundings.
Inside the school.
As soon as you enter the school you can see that they have many material resources. There are all different kinds of thing, they even have a sewing workshop and a carpenter´s workshop! The facilities are very well prepared and access is good. Teachers have their own bathroom where they use to change their clothes according the subject they are assigned to. For instance, if they have physical education or if they do outdoorlearning they wear tracksuit.
The Internet access is fast but sometimes it can be unstable. Furthermore, there is free wifi from Pedersöre municipality.
The school is very welcoming and you feel at home. Everything is clean, tidy and the pupils take care of it. They are careful with the facilities of the school.
When they just enter into the school, they take off their jacket, hang it in the corridor hanger and then they put off their shoes and place them in the ground under the hanger. Inside the school the students walk barefoot and teachers switch their shoes. Pupils bring their mobile phone to use it in some activities they request. They know how tu use it correctly and teachers do not have to scold them at any time.
The school schedule is different from ours. The first lesson takes place at 8:20 and the departure time changes from day to day. Lesson last 60 minutes with a 15 minutes break. From 11:00 to 11:30 they have lunch.
The students do not have the same number of teaching hours. They increase throughout the cycles. In the first cycle 20 hours, in the second 25 hours and in the third 26 hours.
The schedule is shown below.
Mu (Music) : 5° - 6°.
First of all, I introduce myself, I show a video introducing our school and we work on some vocabulary in Spanish, Swedish and Finnish.
Tore starts the class singing some typical Finnish songs with the students. The student can read the letter on the blackboard. They sing it with passion, feel it and enjoy it.
Once they have sung several songs, they take out the music book with notes, lyrics and songs in both Finnish and English. The students choose a song and they are distributed among the different musical instruments (bass, pianos and drums). The rest sing the song with the support of the book.
In the next song they switch places, the teacher writes down in Google Sheets the name of the students so that everyone has the opportunity to play all the instruments.
Mo (Swedish): 1st and 2nd.
Although we are in Finland, it is a Swedish-speaking school. Some students speak a dialect of Swedish. At school they study Swedish and Finnish as languages. In the first cycle they have many hours of Swedish and only one of Finnish. Throughout the cycles, Finn increase and Swedish decrease.
They work on reading. The students are reading and completing reading comprehension worksheets that they are filing in a folder. Everyone has their own rhythm.
After lunch, they eat at 11, I go to see the school facilities together with Tore.
Club (extracurricular plastic arts activity): 5th-6th.
They are offered to the centers by any person or company. They take place just after school hours.
I'm very happy. It is the beginning of a great professional adventure. I am looking forward to going back tomorrow.
